The fuel air mixture for the next engine cycle has to overcome this back pressure to enter the engine combustion cylinder. However if with the help of a catback exhaust the back pressure is reduced the air fuel mixture can rush in faster leading to an improved engine performance.
A catback exhaust is called a catback exhaust because it is located after the catalytic converter. It is made up of pipes and a muffler. These pipes are of larger diameter and have special bends so that the back pressure is minimized. The function of the muffler is to absorb the sound that the exhaust gases would make. The final vent from where the exhaust gases enter the atmosphere is a visible part of the catback exhaust and is often stylized to add to the aesthetics of the car.
